Altus Consult Ltd is implementing a consultancy assignment for Stakeholder Engagement in Matanda Irrigation Scheme<\/strong> in Kanungu District. The assignment aimed to undertake Stakeholders Mapping & Analysis, Continuous Project Awareness creation campaigns, and provide technical support to the Grievance Redress Committees to ensure project understanding & appreciation, promotion, ownership and visibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The Government of Uganda with funding from the World Bank (WB) is implementing the Irrigation for Climate Resilience Project (ICRP) over the period May 2020 to April 2026. The objective of the ICRP is to provide farmers in the project area with access to irrigation and other agricultural services. The project will also establish Operation and Maintenance arrangements for irrigation service delivery and increase farm production potential. It is anticipated that the interventions will be able to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change among the targeted farming community in the project area. The project is implemented by the Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE), with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) as the technical implementation partner. This ICRP has three components namely i) Irrigation Services, ii) Support Services for Agricultural Production and Value Chain Development and iii) Institutional Strengthening and Implementation Support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Matanda Irrigation Scheme is a major strategic investment in Kanungu District, Western Uganda. The scheme embodies a comprehensive model of integrated rural development, demonstrating how strategic, well-supervised investments in irrigation infrastructure can drive agricultural transformation, improve livelihoods, and foster climate-resilient growth in Uganda\u2019s rural communities. The irrigation scheme is part of the efforts aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and building resilience against climate change through the provision of sustainable irrigation infrastructure. As part of component 1 of the Irrigation for Climate Resilience Project (ICRP), this irrigation project directly contributes to national goals of enhancing food security, promoting rural economic development through the strategic objectives that include; 1) Expanding the area under irrigation to increase agricultural output and stabilize farmer incomes, 2) Enhancing climate resilience by providing a reliable, year-round water source, reducing dependence on erratic rainfall, 3) Promoting sustainable water resource management through community-driven approaches and 4) Strengthening agricultural modernization and contributing to national food security and rural employment generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Location<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Matanda irrigation Scheme- is located in southwestern Uganda in the district of Kanungu along river kiruruma in Kihihi subcounty which is about 15km from Kanungu town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the project, the Matanda Irrigation Scheme will be constructed for the benefit of 4,300 farming households, corresponding to 12,900 farmers. The proposed scheme is located in the subcounties of Kanyantorogo, Katete and Kihanda in Kanungu district, western region. The command area is located on river kirurama. The drainage area up to the damsite is 150.73qkm. There is a Guage and discharge site (84270) at Katete -Kahili road on the downstream of the dam site. The drainage area up to the G& D site is 162sq.km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matanda irrigation Scheme covers about 4920 ha of gross command area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
